“I’ve booked Kimberly and Kevin of Serpent and Dove at MadLife more than once, and every single time, they remind me why I do this. Their chemistry, their voices, and the way they connect with a crowd—it’s magic. They don’t just play music; they create a moment. I’m not just a fan—I’m proud to have them on our stage.” - Greg Shaddix

Serpent & Dove's first full album release, "The Battlefield" plants a stake in the North Georgia music scene. Like a laurel stretched out over a rock creek, the soundscape is evocative and gnarly beautiful. A rich tapestry that's both compelling and familiar. The just-right ethereal melodies are full of gritty, folk-inspired rhythms. Think haunting choral arrangements that echo the solemnity and ancient power of the southern church, contrasted with raw, rebellious instrumental, lyrical, and vocal neck-hair-raising. The contrast between light and dark is on full display, like faith against magic. The musical accompaniment oscillates between moments of quiet, poignant beauty and bursts of chaotic, intense energy. Delicate strings weaving through lyrics of lives lived with real pain and beauty. There's real depth here, not a TikTok hook but more "a hopeless hallelujah, an empty amen, a heart full of weariness, a prayer that has no end."
The album is southern gothic enough that Flannery O'Conner would enjoy it with an etched glass Collins full of sweet iced tea covering the vodka just below it. The album is full of chilling whispers to mirror the pervasive fear and superstition that's all too familiar in these North Georgia highlands. A fascinating interplay of tension and harmony throughout, with a real knee slapper out of the gate titled "Adeline".
By the end of the album, you've felt a story full of plot twists and turns driven by powerful emotions: love, hate, fear, and sacrifice. "The Battlefield" is an apropos title to this well-seasoned, passionate collection of songs from Serpent & Dove.
